But some just make the gun look cool also. Oct 30, 4. A good muzzle break will reduce muzzle flip for a faster recovery time. Mostly on pistols used in match shooting. Most are just cosmetic and some are really flash hiders being called muzzle breaks.

The combo units are cosmetic as a flash hider and a muzzle break are not compatible. JTJOct 30, Nov 1, 5.

Even the flash hiders do serve a useful purpose.

Lots of Appleseed instructors use them on their loaner guns. They do a fine job of keeping the muzzle free of debris.

For times when the brake is not preferred, it may be replaced by the included dynamically-matched muzzle weight. Switching between the brake and the weight will not change the bullet's point of impact for a particular load.

The included thread protector may be used if neither the brake nor the weight is desired. Three-position safety is easily accessible and allows the shooter to lock the bolt or to load and unload the rifle with the safety engaged.

I recently surveyed the top shooters in the Precision Rifle Series PRSand this post reviews the rifle suppressors and muzzle brakes those elite shooters were using in The PRS tracks how top competitors place in major rifle matches across the country.

These are the major leagues of sniper-style competitions, with targets typically from to yards. These world-class shooters represent the best of the best in terms of long-range shooting in field conditions. Are you trying to decide whether to invest in a suppressor or just use a muzzle brake? You might find this really interesting. The different colors indicate where the shooters finished.

A black bar represents shooters that finished in the top 10, the dark blue is shooters who finishedand so on. You can see there are twice as many guys running muzzle brakes than suppressors, which is consistent with results from previous years. I was surprised when I first saw this trend, but I conducted a muzzle brake field test recently and through that I gathered some hard data the helped me understand why these guys might prefer muzzle brakes.

Many targets may be engaged from a prone position, but competitors may also be required to maneuver through obstacles and shoot from improvised shooting positions. Competitors carry their rifle and gear all day across natural and sometimes rugged terrain, and even a couple days in a row. Those conditions and constraints mean how they choose gear is very different than benchrest, F-class, high power, or other styles of competitions.

The overwhelming majority said they may run either a muzzle brake or a suppressor, depending on the situation. Another interesting point is that obviously most of these guys have both, and still choose a muzzle brake most of the time. They have one. It likely just comes down to personal preference, with most guys feeling like a muzzle brake gives them an edge for these styles of competitions.

American Precision Arms APA were the most popular muzzle brakes last year, and they took an even bigger lead in There were twice as many APA brakes represented as any other brand. Of those using muzzle brakes, 1 in 3 of were sporting an APA. But there were actually 5 shooters in the top 10 using an APA brake! And I know why.

Muzzle Devices

The hard data showed APA designs were one of the best at reducing recoil see the data. And the guy who invented the design, Jim Seefinished 6 overall! Jim has finished in the top 20 in each of the past 4 years, since the inception of the PRS. There are very few that share that honor. Jim is an outstanding shooter and extremely knowledgeable guy.Posted: Mon Apr 02, pm.

Ruger Precision® Rifle Hybrid Muzzle Brake

I watched an unboxing and review video on this gun whereby the owner installed a Muzzle Brake on this gun. Why would you want that on a 22? Other than cool looks I can't see why? Likely he was installing a forward compensator if not a supressor. A forward compensator is sort of a reverse muzzle brake it directs the muzzle blast and sound down range at the cost of slightly increased recoil.

I have mine on my competition guns so that the timer will pick up the report. The compensator makes it a little louder. You can also see you sights jump slightly less which helps shooting fast stages like in Steel Challenge. Posted: Wed Apr 04, am. If there's one subject that will get posts flowing in a multitude of varying opinions, it involves "compensators" and how well they perform on a.

There has been more "bovine excrement" thrown up against the whirling blades of a very BIG fan than any other subject involving.

Some of the commercially available compensators have holes that go all the way around the periphery of the compensator. Think about that. How the hell is that supposed to be a workable advantage, with holes venting gas that work against all the other holes? I've been working with and experimenting on, "compensators", not muzzle brakes, since for.

What I have found is, the venting holes need to be able to vent the expanding gasses from a fired. The holes need to vent gases upward and not all around the compensator, or be humongous slots that can't offer a jetting action of those expanding gasses. And, there are gasses involved with a.

The gas collection chamber size is also important. If that chamber allows the gas to follow the bullet out of the muzzle, no compensating action is created.

The gas needs to collect in the chamber then find its way up and out of the proper diameter holes that will use that expanding gas to counteract muzzle flip. As soon as all the white stuff engulfing my shooting bench goes away, I want to try my little video camera to see if i can photograph the gas venting action of a properly manufactured. Page 1 of 1.
